Flag is a not for
profit action group set up to resist the infill of Fall
Hill Quarry
Infill of the Fall Hill
Quarry. This is proposed following
the tragic death by drowning of a young man from Holmgate. J.C. Balls have asked for planning permission
to landfill the quarry. The proposed infill
would result in up to 40 lorry movements a day, that's a
lorry every 15 minutes. The 8 wheeled lorries are each 32 tonnes
and the length of time it will take to infill the quarry
with 130,000 tonnes of waste would be nearly three
years. The serious impact this would have on the local
area include:
● Serious risks to
traffic on winding narrow country lanes
● Danger to pedestrians,
walkers, cyclists, joggers and horse riders caused by
this influx of heavy vehicles
● Massive increase in
noise and dust which would affect local people
● Loss of a popular
walking area with locals and tourists to the area
● Impact on local
businesses from traffic delays
The impact of an increase
in Heavy Goods Vehicles has serious implications for the
residents of the villages of Littlemoor Stretton and Woolley
Moor. Where will the displaced quarry water go? There
are a number of scenarios of what could happen. These
include potential flooding of nearby farmland and
properties and contamination of the River Amber and Ogston Reservoir.
J.C. Balls
in their proposal are hoping that the dispersed water will
drain away through the natural soughs which exist. However,
only a very sketchy idea of the underground workings exists
and a desk report commissioned into the Hydrology of the
area suggests that the main draining sough is most probably
blocked. Therefore, how will the water drain away? A
proper survey of the quarry and a chemical analysis of the
water needs to be carried out before any water is dispersed
or drained away.
Another cause for concern is the past attempts of another
company who tried to fill in this quarry and failed because
of the vast amount water. The underwater flow caused
deposited rock to dissipate away. After losing a digger in
the water, the company gave up.
The
overwhelming number of local residents feel the proposed
development would be damaging to the local community during
the construction and on completion.
During a
long period of inactivity the quarry was designated as a
site of special scientific interest because of it's
geological conditions. It is surrounded by a number of
popular walks used by local residents and visitors to the
area. There are so many common sense reasons that the infill
of Fall Hill Quarry should not go ahead. To prevent
the infill of Fall Hill Quarry you must act now! Please
